About Tornjak

Tornjak is a very old livestock guardian dog breed that is a part of the cultural heritage of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. This, almost extinct, national breed was resurrected and got provisional recognition by the FCI in 2009, and then full recognition in 2017. This is a natural breed that has undergone centuries of natural selection and the only criteria that have mattered were its survivability and working ability. Tornjak can work in extremely varied geographical conditions. It is a squarely built dog who is agile enough and has a lot of endurance to be successful in all his tasks.

For more information on the breed you can read the official FCI Standard :

To understand Tornjak temperament is to understand what is required and expected of livestock guardian dogs in general. A Tornjak should be confident, self-assured and should have a very highly developed sense of situational awareness, and the ability to think critically and independently in various scenarios. A confident and stable Tornjak will not attack anyone unnecessarily or unprovoked. On the other hand, when a real threat or situation arises where a dog needs to protect, a proper Tornjak should then be an uncompromising guardian that shows bravery, and great tenacity and does not back down until the threat is neutralized.

In unfamiliar situations, they are very calm, but always on alert and ready. They are quite calm regarding other LGD dogs, but they are guardians. That means they are territorial. Regarding humans, they are very favorable and if provoked they will not attack immediately, but eventually, they will. On the other hand, if nothing interesting is happening, you will not notice they are even here. In the right environment, in the correct hands, and household with proper guidance and socialization, a Tornjak can be a wonderful and loving family companion and a friend. Usually, they are very gentle with their children and pets, still, they might misinterpret roughness between children as someone trying to hurt their loved ones and might react protectively.

However, one must understand how they (and most other LGDs) think and would potentially act in various scenarios, such as being protective of the home and family and sometimes not being overly enthusiastic or keen about strangers. It is also important to be realistic about expectations from a Tornjak and not expect it to behave like a Labrador Retriever, such as being very suitable for a dog park. I believe the Tornjak is a wonderful dog that is very capable as a livestock guardian but can also be a trusted family guardian, companion, and lifelong friend.
